#ThrowbackDataThursday is LIVE at Tableau Conference 2018! So, this week's dataset is focusing on some New Orleans specific data - the Sugar Bowl. Though only about halfway through the 2018 College Football Season, New Orleans is already preparing for the 2019 edition of the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Within half a mile of the airport headed into the city, I saw a billboard for the game.

The Sugar Bowl, is the second oldest bowl game in College Football, behind only the Rose Bowl. Played annually since 1935, the game has officially, and before that unofficialy, been tied to the Southeastern Conference. At the inception of the Sugar Bowl, Tulane, located in New Orleans was a member of the SEC and played host to the game. Tulane played in the first game in 1935, in front of a modest crowd of 28,000. That number soon grew, making the Sugar Bowl one of the best attended bowl games year on year.

Associating with the SEC has provided the Sugar Bowl the opportunity to host several national championship (pre-BCS/CFP) deciders, hosting the #1 team in the nation 16 times. In the BCS era, the Sugar Bowl was one of the four covetted BCS Bowls, and hosted the BCS Championship twice. Now in the College Football Playoff era, the Sugar Bowl is one of the rotating hosts of the Semifinal games.
